These photos prove dogs really are the best people

From spending hours trying to get the best shot of three pugs in a row boat, to capturing the special bond between Diamond and his heavily tattooed owner Phillip, this pet photographer is prepared to go that extra step to capture just what dogs mean for their owners.

Now Craig Bullock, from New Zealand, who has been a pet photographer for over 15 years, has released a book, A Dog's Life, and after being inspired by a series he did on animals after the Christchurch earthquake, he decided to take his talent around the country.

'It was an amazing project to work on and some of the stories are absolutely heartbreaking but it was just an overwhelming feeling of hope from speaking to the owners,' Bullock told Daily Mail Australia.

'From there I really wanted to expand on that and see what the rest of New Zealand had to offer and see what people around the country were doing with their dogs.

'You hear all sorts of stories about people around towns who are well-known for their dogs,' he added.

While all the images that appear in Bullock's latest book have a special story behind them, the photographer said there are a few which hold certain significance.

'I had lots and lots of fun with the pugs, with the three pugs in the boat,' he said.

'It was a challenge to get the image... if you know any pugs you'll know how naughty and mischievous they are but it was a lot of fun,' Bullock added.

Another of the shots which is close to the photographer's heart is one of Phillip and his springer spaniel Diamond.

'Phillip is a guy that's had a tough life, he got himself into a bit of trouble and really turned his life around and focused on artwork and his dog to kind of get him back on track,' Bullock said.

Sadly a few months ago Diamond passed away, leaving his owner devastated.
