Johnny Depp sponsors bat Jacki Sparrow before his dogs narrowly escaped being put down by Australian government

His terrier dogs Pistol and Boo were recently forced to flee the country after they became embroiled in a life threatening customs controversy while in Australia.

But before all those animal antics it has been revealed that Johnny Depp, 51, sponsored one orphaned bat and met another during his stay Down Under.

Trish Wimberley, Director of the Australian Bat Clinic, told Daily Mail Australia on Monday that the Pirates Of The Caribbean Star has pledged his movie star money to sponsor a baby rescue flying fox.

Named Jacki Sparrow because of her sparrow-like qualities and the Hollywood actor's close proximity, the tiny mammal was found injured in the recent Queensland storms.

'Johnny Depp is only about 15, 20 minutes from here [filming] so I said we should call her little Jacki Sparrow,' remembers Trish.

The team then contacted Johnny's publicist to see if the actor minded them borrowing the name from the Hollywood heartthrob.

'He was very interested in it [Jacki Sparrow] and so we asked if Johnny would like to sponsor her, because we do sponsor little babies and he said yes,' Trish recounts.

'He understands bats, he understands the importance of them' says Trish of the hunky actor, while Ashley said he fell 'in love' with little Fifi

'We're going to be sending Johnny an adoption certificate and little update photos, which is what we normally do with our sponsors,' she says, adding that the Queensland-based centre was 'very lucky' to have the actor's support.

While Trish wasn't able to divulge exactly how much the actor is pledging to sponsor, she says it can be anything from as little as $1 cent a month and sometimes multiple people will sponsor one of the mammals.

As for Jacki Sparrow coming face-to-face with the real Jack Sparrow, Trish is hopeful.

'At some stage he said he wouldn't mind meeting her, so whether I get permission to take her to him or whether he has time to come here, I can't say... he's pretty busy.

'He understands bats, he understands the importance of them – I think he's a bit of an animal fan.'

Bizarrely, Jacki Sparrow isn't Johnny's only recent encounter with the nocturnal animals.

The husband of Amber Heard also enjoyed a personal meet and greet with a winged wonder named  Fifi, who was rescued by Bats Qld after she got ill during a heat wave in New South Wales.

Ashley and Paula Fraser, as well as a handful of carers from Bats Qld, were invited down to the Queensland film set to introduce the cast and crew to the injured animals.

'It was during his lunch break so he was in character, so we very fortunate.

'He absolutely loved the bats, absolutely fell in love with them straight away,' says Ashley, 21, who has worked at the non-profit organisation for a couple of years.

'We were telling him all about Fifi and the heat stress and the work that Bats Qld does, and he was in love with the bats,' said Ashley adding the actor was 'very nice'.

Earlier this month the Australian government threatened to put down Amber and Johnny's two tiny terrier dogs after they illegally brought them into the country last month, without taking the necessary quarantine steps.

The pooches were put on a jet and flown back to the US over a week ago. Heard reportedly accompanied them, along with her father David.

Depp and Heard had reportedly notified the government that they would leave the Gold Coast in Queensland after being given 50 hours notice to take their pets back to the US.

The ordeal came after Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said it was time the dogs 'buggered off back to the US'.

Producers opted to shoot the blockbuster movie Down Under after the Australian government provided a $20 million tax incentive.

It was already halted back on March 10, when the star reportedly returned to the US for surgery on an injured hand.
