Family Realizes Tiny Puppy Isn't A Puppy At All

A Canadian family were stunned to find a sickly puppy had been abandoned by either its mother or owner by Marsh Lake in Yukon over Easter Weekend.

But the real shock came after they took it to the vet for a check-up and were told that, despite its features, this little guy is actually a baby fox.

'I just defaulted to thinking it was a dog,' Ralph Shopland, who came across the injured animal while on a walk, told CBC.

'We needed to get it attended to because we don't have that capability.

I'm not a mommy.'

It took a few days for officers at Yukon Wildlife Preserve to work out they weren't dealing with a dog, during which time a surrogate was found to feed the critter.

There were suspicions it could have been an otter, marten or a wolverine.

It was then decided he was a fox because of the white tip at the end of his tail.

However experts won't really be sure until he grows a bit older.

He is being bottle fed every three hours and managed to gain six grams in just one day.

'It seems like he is well hydrated and active,' says Maria Hallock of the Yukon Wildlife Preserve.

'He doesn't cry between meals so that means he isn't hungry. He's getting enough milk.'

Conservation officers say in this case the mother fox was likely hit by a car.

Yukon conservation officer Dave Bakica advised people not to approach animals in the wild and that usually when they seem abandoned, the mother is not far away

However, they urge people not to approach and touch wild animals.

'If you think you've found orphaned wildlife, in most cases mother is very close by and just waiting for you to leave,' Yukon conservation officer Dave Bakica said.

'We try to tell people, please do not pick up any orphaned wildlife.'

The little fox will now likely live in captivity since he's now imprinted by humans.

If there's not room at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, officials says they'll find him a home at another site.
